We introduced MakeUseOf readers to ifttt in September of last year. Since then, I've made a few posts regarding the web service . Those two articles introduce 18 one-click "recipes" that can supercharge your Internet experience. As ifttt continues to grow, users are contributing new and more useful ideas. Thanks to this web service, anyone and everyone can automate and simplify their most routine tasks, absolutely free. In this article, I'd like to introduce five more general recipes that I've found to be especially helpful. Email Me '10 Things To Know This Morning' Silicon Alley Insider is something you've got to keep up with if you're interested in the tech world. I'm not a fan of email spam, but I can confidently say that this is one of the few pieces of email that hit my inbox every morning that I make sure to read. As you can see there, it's pretty cut-and-dry. There's no time wasted, the headlines are short and to the point, and with a single email you can get your early-morning fix of news in the technology sector. Without this newsletter, I'd seem a lot less informed in the pre-noon hours. When Facebook Profile Picture Changes, Update Twitter Profile Picture If you use the Internet for social purposes, you're on Facebook and Twitter . That's the law of the land. If you're on Facebook and Twitter, you know what a load it can be to independently manage both profiles. You're more likely to change your Facebook default picture more often than your Twitter avatar. With that, this recipe does exactly what it says. When your Facebook profile picture is changed, it will automatically update your Twitter avatar to reflect the change. iTunes Receipts To Evernote Even with just an iPod touch, I'm still huge on iOS apps. I find myself buying a new one every other day, and there are scenarios where it can be important to keep track of those receipts. If you're an Evernote user, this is the best way. It's completely automated, too. Any time you purchase an item from iTunes, it'll automatically be added to Evernote and tagged appropriately. Thanking People In Twitter When They Mention You Or RT Let me first state that I actually hate the idea of this recipe. I hate automated tweets and messages in general. However , this is a very useful and popular recipe and I can't leave it to be ignored. If you're interested in building followers, this recipe will engage you with anyone who helps you on that path. If someone mentions you in a tweet or retweets you, you'll automatically send a thanks their way. Dear Diary, A Running Log Of Where I Am This is probably one of the most cool and unique usages of ifttt. It's also one of the oldest recipes on the website. Using your Foursquare account, this recipe will keep your Google Calendar up to date with where you went on each day in the past. It's really interesting to look back later and see where you've been, especially when it's all painless and automated. I've said it before and I'll say it again. ifttt is one of the most useful web services I've ever come across. Please share your thoughts about these recipes in the comments, I'd like to hear what you think! |
