Scam Strikes At Angry Mass Effect Fans [Updates]

Mass Effect 3 fans unhappy with the game's ending now have something else to be angry about – an email scam targeting them. There's nothing subtle about the scam's approach. It arrives under the heading "Mass Effect 3 New Ending Download" and then whips up fan fury by saying the original ending "was really bad." It continues on and provides download links for a brand new ending. Predictably, the file doesn't work (it's a password protected .RAR). A text file in the download claims that fans can try some other links, all of which are affiliate survey scams (just fill out the survey to download!). The threat could be worse. Wasting your time by directing you to affiliate links is certainly better than linking you to a Trojan. With that said, there's no reason why the scam could not be altered to include malicious software (it would only require that the links be changed). It's never a good idea to click on download links found in emails from an unknown source. Bioware has admitted that they are working to address criticism of Mass Effect 3's ending. However, any update that might happen will be available exclusively through Origin (Electronic Art's digital store) and will not be distributed as a link. Source: GFI Labs
