Select, Copy, Modify Text inside an image using Project Naptha

Have you ever thought if there was a way to select and modify text inside an image? It's possible now, with just a Chrome extension.

That's right. With this extension, you can treat text inside image, as normal text. It's called Project Naptha.

Selecting text inside image

Project Naptha applies OCR (Optical Character Recognition) on all the images in the browser, allowing you to select text and do things like copy, erase, modify, translate and more.

It works as expected, for most images, especially for screenshots and other text embedded images. Apparently, no OCR technology is perfect.

To use it, just hover your cursor on text in an image, and just start selecting. You'll see the text highlighted with transparent blue colour. You can then right click and perform some action on the text – like, search text on Google, erase it from image, translate it into other languages and so on.

Even thought it sounds like this extension needs a lot of processing power, it runs just fine. No crashes or memory hogging till now.

It's only available for Chrome right now. The developer says there will be a Firefox add-on releasing in a few days.

So if you're on Chrome, head on to Chrome Webstore and try out this nifty extension.

Flipkart launches Same-day delivery in 10 cities at Rs 200 per item

Back in January, Flipkart launched In-a-day delivery. And now, Flipkart is offering Same-day delivery in a view to deliver better services to the customers and compete with the fast growing Amazon India.

Starting from today, Flipkart's Same-day delivery will be available for deliveries to 10 cities : Delhi, Chennai, Faridabad, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Gurgaon, Bangalore, Manesar and Kolkata. Flipkart's In-a-day delivery covers 27 cities as of now.

image
Order before 12 noon and get it delivered the same day

If you place an order before 12 noon on a business day, the product will be delivered by 9 pm on the same day. As a promotional offer, Flipkart is offering Same-day delivery at just Rs 140 per item and this offer is only from April 28 to 30.

Also, Flipkart is offering Rs 5000 in Flipkart wallet if the courier partner fails to deliver the product on the same as promised. You can make this cash for future purchases at Flipkart. This cash is not refundable to your bank account.

Before you make the purchase, make sure to check if your pincode is covered by this service. Also note that only a few products by certain sellers are qualified for this service.

Similar to In-a-day delivery service, the shipment price will be collected as a part of the order and will be refunded to your Flipkart wallet if the order is not delivered as promised.

Pricing by other companies

The pricing is little high when compared with the One-day or Two-days delivery service offered by Amazon India. Amazon India offers One-day delivery at Rs 90 per order and Two-days delivery at Rs 70 per order.

On the other day, Snapdeal and Tradus are offering One-day delivery services free of charge.

Lyrics Finder grabs and embeds song lyrics in your MP3s

If you like to keep your Music library complete or like to sing along to your songs, here's a great little app called Lyrics Finder.

Lyrics Finder

Lyrics Finder scans your music library for MP3s and downloads the lyrics.

To get started, drag-and-drop a file or a folder containing MP3s.

You'll of course need to make sure your Music Player app supports lyrics, otherwise there's no point in embedding lyrics inside the MP3s.

For example, on Android, there's Poweramp, Shuttle and more music players which support lyrics. On Mac, I use Muzzy, a great mini player for iTunes.

If an MP3 file already has lyrics, then the app leaves it intact, i.e. no overriding.

Searching and downloading lyrics is pretty fast, it took less than a minute to grab lyrics for 400 songs in my iTunes library. A green indicator is shown on the song's album art, if lyrics were available for that song (see the above screenshot).

Lyrics Finder is available for OS X and Windows, the link is below.

Automation app IFTTT releases for Android

IFTTT, short for "If This Then That", is a great web service for automating tasks between internet services. It's been a while since it has started and now it's on Android (and iPhone too).

IFTTT

Most Android users would have heard about Tasker, an app which runs specific tasks based on the context. IFTTT is like Tasker, but for the web.

There's a lot you can do with the service, most obvious ones are: changing your Twitter picture automatically as your Facebook picture is changed, getting a notification if it's raining tomorrow, backing up your phone's contacts to Google spreadsheets etc.

Now that IFTTT is available on Android, you can be even more creative. There are five new channels introduced: Android Device, Location, Phone call, Photos, SMS.

So if you've misplaced your phone which is on silent mode, you can increase the ringtone volume by sending an E-mail. This is possible because IFTTT now has permissions to control your Android device.

To get started, check out the most popular recipes in their site.

To enable the Android channels, you have to first install the app on your device. Get it from the link below.

Indian Railways launches official train enquiry app for Windows 8

Center for Railway Information Services (CRIS) has launched a Windows 8 app that keeps the users posted about the Indian trains status. The app is available for Windows 8 desktop and Windows Phone 8.

This National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app comes packed with many useful features that will be helpful for the Indian rail commuters. It helps the users the track the status of a train on motion, search for trains between stations, cancelled, diverted, rescheduled trains, arrival and departure time of trains and more.

image

Based on first impressions, the app worked fast and delivered the information fast. With just the input of the train number, you can get details about the Indian trains.

There may be many third party mobile apps that do the same task, but this being the official one from the Indian Railways, it should keep the users posted on accurate and prompt information.

If you didn't know, Indian Railways also has the official IRCTC app for Windows devices. There are no reports on when the Indian Railways plans on bringing these apps to other mobile platforms.

Twitter’s new profile looks like Facebook

Twitter is hardly used by regular users from its website. Most regular users probably use something like tweetdeck or other similar desktop apps. But regular users are not really Twitter's concern. Their big concern are the people who sign up and then simply stop using it because it is too confusing.

So how does Twitter keep these new users interested on its service? One simple way is to be more like a social network rather than a endless stream of tweets and links. With Twitter new profile design, they have shamelessly copied Facebook's design.

Twitter_New_Profil_Design
Twitter's new Facebook like design

I would not blame Twitter for copying Facebook. It would give a great deal of familiarity for a first-time user.

That said, I would not enjoy this sort of design on my phone app, which Twitter will probably end up doing because mobile is the future (rather present).

Interesting new feature added is that you can now pin a tweet at the top. This has to be a tweet you posted and not a retweet.

Get the new profile:

  • Just log-in to your account on Twitter.
  • Visit the link – http://ift.tt/1gEIsmg.
  • Scroll down a bit and click on the "Get it Now" button.

Your Twitter account will show up with the new profile design.

Google Releases Standalone Camera App for Android 4.4+

Today, Google has introduced a new standalone Camera App. This was significantly needed as many Android phones which are not Nexus did not have useful features like "Photosphere". Overall the camera features even on Nexus were not exactly brilliant.

So a standalone camera app will be very useful for Android users. Even if you are using a Nexus, this there are some added features so it is a good idea to go ahead and update the app or re-install it.

The Google Camera app is only available for Android 4.4+ (KitKat) version for phones and tablets.

Google Standalone Camera Interface

Google Camera App features

  • The prominent feature are Lens Blur and Panorama. Overall the options are a lot easier flip through.
  • I tested the Lens Blur function and was quite impressed with how well it works. Below is an image I took using Lens Blur.
Lens Blur - Google Camera App
Photo taken using Lens Blur – Google Camera App

Now hopefully we will see better cameras on Android phones than what are available now. If you have an Android phone running 4.4 KitKat, then this app would be really useful one.

Download Heartbleed Detector for Android, LastPass’ Heartbleed checker

Heartbleed, a recently discovered OpenSSL security bug has created fears in the minds of many Internet users. OpenSSL provides communication security to web, email, instant messaging and various virtual private networks too.

Heartbleed is a serious flaw in the OpenSSL security system that allows any person to access the memory of the systems of the client or sever and get information.

image

This security flaw has been found in only certain versions of OpenSSL software. Android devices use OpenSSL software. Based on reports, Google has confirmed that Android 4.1.1 is vulnerable. To check if your device is affected by Heartbleed, a new app from Lookout Mobile Security is available and is called Heartbleed Detector.

Heartbleed Detector is a free app on the Google Play store and supports all Android devices running Android 2.2 and above. Once you download and install the app, it automatically scans your device and tells you if your device is vulnerable or not.

As for me, my Android device is running a version of OpenSSL that is affected by Heartbleed, but there are no serious issues that I should pay attention to. My device is safe.

image

This app will not scan the apps on your Android. So, you will not be able to check if your online accounts are vulnerable to Heartbleed.

Solution to save your Android device from Heartbleed

As of now there is no option to save your Android from this bug. Google is currently working on a patch and will send the update through mobile carriers. To update your Android software, go to Settings > About > Software Update.

If you are worried about waiting for Google's patch and want to safeguard your Android device, consider installing Android anti-virus apps from Google Play Store.

LastPass Heartbleed Checker

LastPass, a password manager, has launched its own Heartbleed checker. It allows you to type a website address and shows if it is vulnerable to the Heartbleed bug. It also gives an in depth analysis of which version of OpenSSL the website is on and if the website is patched from the bug.

Activate DND (Do Not Disturb) and Check Status

DND

Few months ago, I moved from Airtel to Idea and suddenly I started getting a lot of telemarketing calls. It wasted a lot of my time as I was under the impression, DND was active on my account.

It turned out that Airtel removed me from DND when I decided to get away from them. Among telemarketing calls, there were calls from Airtel also.

Check Status

You may call 1909 to enquire current status and know your NDNC registration date.

I prefer the online way. You can check DND status online using this official link http://ift.tt/1n7BveD for any number!

Below is what I saw for my number:

DND-status-1

As you can see, DND was de-activated on my number on January 9, 2014. I switched from Airtel to Idea around same date.

Does it happen always? Do you expect DND to get deactivated when you switch from one provider to another provider? Not sure. I have one more number and when we switched it from BSNL to Idea, it's DND remained active!

DND-Status-bsnl-idea-1

If you are getting calls from number starting with 0140 then you may not be on DND or getting a call from somebody who doesn't respect DND!

Activate DND (Do Not Disturb)

As I was removed from DND, I had to activate it again.

To Stop ALL Calls

Send SMS with the message Start 0 to 1909.

You can will get a reply by SMS asking for confirmation. Send another message with a letter Y to confirm.

If you don't like typing, you can also call 1909 from your mobile and follow instructions.

To allow calls of particular category

Category selection 0 in Start 0 blocks all categories. If you wan't to allow some categories only, below is a list of category numbers.

  1. Banking/Insurance/Financial products/credit cards
  2. Real Estate
  3. Education
  4. Health
  5. Consumer goods and automobiles
  6. Communication/Broadcasting/Entertainment/IT
  7. Tourism and Leisure

To allow category specific calls, type Start 1 for Banking/Insurance, etc category.

You can specify multiple category as well by typing Start 1,2 in SMS.

Register a complaint

If DND is active on your number and you are still getting calls, you can register a complaint about calls to your service provider.I was under the impression that complaints need to be made directly to TRAI or some government authority.

By SMS

You can send a SMS to 1909 in following format to register your complain.

the unsolicited commercial communication, XXXXXXXXXX, dd/mm/yy

Or another format:

COMP TEL NO XXXXXXXXXX, dd/mm/yy, Time hh:mm

Replace XXXXXXXXXX by number from which you received call and dd/mm/yy and hh:mm with date & time, respectively.

Check complaint status

You will get a complaint number, whose status can be tracked online from http://ift.tt/1k8nBsy

Android App

There is an Android App to register complains easily here. (thanks anantshri)

Important Notes

If you are moving from one service provider to another service provider, under MNP (mobile number portability) scheme. and you suddenly starts getting a lot of telemarketing calls, it's better to check your number's DND status online.
